Black Gidgee
Black Gidgee (or Belyando Blackwood) is a tree of 10-13m with a thick rough bark and a poor form so is rarely cut for it's wood. It grows in a small region in central Queensland near the Belyando River and its dark heart wood makes it suitable for smaller craft items. Little is known of the wood or the tree as they are rarely used.

This rare 7 million year old Podocarp. is now extinct! It was identified, by wood experts in Australia from its microscopic characteristics of the wood, as an ancient podocarp (Cupressinoxylon sp.). Podocarps are still represented in many genera in the southern hemisphere. It was dated from the gravels & sediments in Gippsland Victoria where it was found. Although black, from minerals and long periods of burial, it is still woody and workable, not stone.
